Cotton is one of the most popular textile fibers—and for good reason. It is soft, easy to wash, durable, absorbent, and affordable. On the downside, cotton wrinkles easily. That means proper care is essential to keep your garments looking their best. Below are seven practical tips to keep your cotton clothing looking great for longer:
1. Wash new garments separately first
Always check the colorfastness of new cotton clothing. Rub a damp white cloth over an inconspicuous area of the fabric. If color transfers, the item is not colorfast. Wash it separately or with similar colors.
2. Wash cotton with care
Most cotton garments can be safely washed on the cotton cycle. This program rinses thoroughly and spins more powerfully for a deep clean.
To extend the life of your clothing, choose a gentle cotton or delicate cycle with lower spin speeds. This is softer on the fibers and helps preserve shape and color.
Turn garments inside out before washing to protect against friction, fading, and wear. Also consider:
- Use a low spin speed:
- < 600 rpm for delicate or colored cotton
- 800–1000 rpm for shirts, polos, sweaters
- 1200–1400 rpm for towels and bedding
- Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener
- Fill the drum only halfway
Note: Wet laundry left too long in a closed drum can develop odors. Remove it immediately after washing.

3. Set the right temperature
Although cotton can withstand higher temperatures well, it is important to look at the specific garment. Not every cotton item can (or needs to) be washed at the same temperature. The ideal setting depends on the type of garment, the color, and how dirty it is. Therefore, always check the care label first. This is leading. As a general guideline, you can follow the recommendations below:
- 30 °C
Delicate or bright colors, lightly soiled. - 40 °C
Shirts, polos, sweaters (ideal standard) - 60 °C
Heavily soiled items (if allowed) - 90 °C
Underwear, socks, towels (only if specified)
When in doubt, choose 30°C or 40°C. Remove and shake garments after washing to reduce wrinkles.
4. Pay attention to your colors
New brightly or dark-colored cotton clothing often releases dye the first time. Therefore, wash these items separately or add a color catcher sheet to the laundry. This absorbs loose dye and prevents other garments from discoloring. These sheets are easily available in supermarkets.
Preferably wash colored clothing inside out. This helps limit color fading. In addition, choose a detergent specifically for colored laundry. Do not let colored cotton clothing dry in direct sunlight, as this can cause fading. A shaded place is better for preserving the colors.
5. Use a dryer in moderation
A tumble dryer works excellently to save time, but has the disadvantage that garments come out wrinkled and may shrink or discolor at high temperatures. It also causes more wear. If you do use a dryer, choose a low temperature or the special cotton setting.
A better solution is to hang your laundry while wet on a wide hanger, so the shoulders are well supported. Hooked or knitted cotton garments are better dried flat to prevent stretching. Preferably hang clothing to dry in the shade (direct sunlight fades colors).
Lightly reshape garments before hanging them up, this reduces wrinkles and makes ironing easier afterwards. Drying in the open air or in a laundry room is also better for the environment and for your clothing.

6. Iron for a smooth result
Cotton is one of the easiest fabrics to iron. A few tips to make it easier:
- Iron cotton while it is still slightly damp. For shirts, a spray bottle works perfectly to soften stubborn wrinkles.
- Use the cotton or steam setting of your iron.
- Iron dark or colored cotton clothing on the inside to prevent shiny spots.
- Work from top to bottom (collar > sleeves/cuffs > front and back panels) and pull the fabric tight.
- A clean, tightly stretched ironing board cover makes a difference.
Do you not have much experience with ironing yet? No worries, together with Suitable you can iron like a pro in no time! For busy men, a handheld steamer is an efficient alternative for wrinkle-free clothing.
7. Do not store unwashed cotton clothing in the wardrobe
Storing unwashed cotton clothing in the wardrobe is a bad idea. Sweat, skin oils, and other stains not only attract moths and other insects, but also cause odors and can make stains permanent if they remain in the fabric for a long time. Therefore, always store clothing clean, let it dry properly before hanging it up, and air out your wardrobe regularly.
