  • 26 November 2021
  • Roderick Brouwer

Although some might think that the Dutch still walk in clogs and black skirts, this is only partially true. The dutch have some great clothing brands, and most people look pretty fashionable. So what should you wear when living or visiting the Netherlands?

Continue to read on, and we will tell you all about the Dutch fashion and what to wear during specific seasons.

Clocks are long gone

Clogs and other wooden shoes are long gone. You might find a lost pair near a farm, but it is a dying commonality even there. The only pair of wooden shoes you’ll find is near tourist shops and attractions. Yep, sorry to burst that bubble for you.

What type of clothing do men wear in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, most men wear jeans and tees or a sweater combined with some low-rise trainers. However, per region and age category, you see different styles. Students, for example, mainly wear chinos, dress shirts, and neat shoes.

Dutch City style compared to rural regions

In the city you find more variety of styles. For instance:
Urban Streetwear
Business wear
Smart casual

In more rural villages, most men will walk in a sweater combined with some jeans. They mostly finish their outfit with some brown or black shoes.

One style you see in both rural and urban areas is what you could describe as the “classic look”. This is a knitted sweater over a neat shirt, and they match it with some chinos or denim jeans.

What do people wear in the Netherlands in winter?

During winter, you’ll find a lot of men wearing a thick parka coat. Another coat that men wear a lot is the woolen overcoat. Besides these types of coats, layers are the key. So mix your t-shirt or dress shirt with a jumper, hoodie or nice sports jacket.

Other fashion items are turtle and rollneck sweaters. These are worn both solely on some jeans, chinos or underneath a sports jacket. You even find men combine it with a waistcoat.

What do people wear in the Netherlands in summer?

In summer dutch people like to wear shorts and t-shirts. This in combination with ankle socks and sporty shoes. Older men tend to opt for a polo shirt with some jeans or chinos. And, although this is not your typical work attire, jeans and a polo shirt are also commonly accepted in most offices.

How do people dress in dutch weather?

To protect yourself from the ever-changing dutch weather, it is sometimes hard to find the right outfit. One minute it rains, and the other the sun is out heating you up. A breathable wind and rain resistance jacket is the essential must-have item every dutchy or tourist should have with him.

What do locals wear in Amsterdam?

What do locals wear in Amsterdam? Well, this highly depends on age, gender, social, economic background, and many more aspects. But in general, you’ll see: urban-influenced youngsters, classicly dressed students, and babyboomers, trendy young professionals, and hipsters. All with their distinctive subcultural dress code.

How do I not look like a tourist in Amsterdam?

First of all, when visiting Amsterdam or the Netherlands during summer, Don’t wear your shorts in combination with running shoes and high white or black socks. Also, leave your fanny pack at home. Instead, pick a stylish bag and carry your belongings in there.

During winter you won’t look like a tourist if you at least leave the Amsterdam umbrellas in the shops ;-). And again. Pick some stylish trainers instead of your actual running shoes. The Dutch like comfort, and in cities, they tend to look well dressed and groomed as well.
