What is a dress suit?
A dress suit is the neatest thing a man can put on, it is also referred to as a tailcoat suit, white tie, or dress coat. This costume consists of a suit jacket with two long slips at the back combined with pants, with a dress suit, you wear patent shoes, a white waistcoat, a self-tied bow tie, and a white tie shirt, often slightly different from the tuxedo shirt. It is not appropriate to wear a wristwatch with a tailcoat suit, opt for a pocket watch instead.
Morning coats are rarely worn these days, yet you still see them on occasions such as:
- Earning a doctoral title
- At balls and ballroom dances
- Masonic meetings
- Royal ceremonies
- In symphony orchestras, both the conductor and the musicians wear a dress suit.
People with awards and distinctions may choose to wear their awards pinned on their dress suit jacket. However, there are special etiquette rules for this.
