Congratulations! You have been invited to a fancy wedding, an exclusive dinner, or a spectacular gala. Not surprisingly, a dress code is in effect at this event. You probably also saw the words “white tie” in your invitation. But what exactly does this mean and what do you need to consider when it comes to occasional wear? In this article, we dive deeper into this classic dress code.
What is a white tie event?
Simply put, these are the swankiest gatherings you can attend. Because of its formal nature, strict etiquette applies. Sometimes the French name “carvate blanche” is used. The name is a reference to the white bows usually worn for these occasions. Male guests are always expected to appear in a dress suit.
What is a dress suit?
A dress suit is a five-piece men’s suit usually worn after 5:30 pm. There are several occasions when a dress suit is appropriate, such as during ballroom dancing, award ceremonies, dinners at a royal court and as a musician in a symphony orchestra. This costume is not suited for hiking or other outdoor activities. For daytime events, a morning coat is worn. This alternative jacket stops above the waist, is classically cut, and has a stylish button closure.
What does a dress suit consist of?
It is easy these days to buy ready-made dress suits in stores and online shops. Nevertheless, it is wise to know what parts they should consist of. After all, it would be embarrassing to only find out at the party that your set was not complete after all. A dress suit consists of the following pieces:
- Black tailcoat: This is a long jacket where the back comes down to the knees and ends in two sharp points at the front. The lapel (collar) is usually made of smooth fabrics such as satin. In addition, it has buttons that are attached for decoration. It is not meant to be closed!
- White waistcoat: This is a type of waistcoat, but with an open back and adjustable straps. It is generally made of piqué (embossed cotton). In some cases, this vest can also be black.
- Tailcoat shirt: This is a white shirt made of piqué with a wingtip collar. This is a stand-up collar where the pointed points are folded upward. This makes the white bow tie stand out.
- White bow: Guests are encouraged to tie these themselves.
- Black dress pants: These are formal pants with a satin galloon (decorative strip) on the sides of the trouser legs.
- Patent leather shoes: These are the only type of shoes you wear under a dress suit.
What accessories go with a dress suit?
Some people compare a white tie gathering to a trip back in time. This is mainly because the clothes of both male and female guests are traditional in nature. The same goes for the accessories you can wear with the dress suit:
- White pocket square: This is a matter of taste, but it does create a sophisticated look.
- White suspenders: Just in case you have a bit too much room in your pants. In any case, a belt is out of the question!
- Cufflinks: A sophisticated addition to your shirt. The main thing is that these do not stand out too much. White and silver ones are the most common.
- Gala gloves: Again, these are not mandatory, but do complete the classic picture of the dress suit. These are available in both white and black.
- Black socks: Nothing is more distracting than brightly colored or variegated socks under a dress suit. Therefore, black socks are the norm at white tie parties.
Do’s and dont’s with a dress suit
White tie events are elegant gatherings. So, it’s not surprising that you need to be mindful of the etiquette. Here are some important rules:
- Perhaps obvious, but nevertheless very important: make sure your attire looks groomed. This means that it is neatly ironed, without scuffs or holes and spotless.
- It is desirable to wear only the colors white, gray, and black. Bright colors and striking or busy patterns are not permitted.
- Black bows are reserved for service personnel.
- A necktie looks neat but is not appreciated when it comes to white tie.
- A wristwatch is considered rude. You make a hurried impression where it seems as if you don’t appreciate the company. A pocket watch, however, is permitted.
