What is a black tie event
Black tie, in French cravate noire, is a dress rule or dress code in which male guests are expected to appear in a dinner suit. The name refers to the black bow ties traditionally worn at this type of event. You mainly come across black tie at formal occasions such as galas, award ceremonies, royal ceremonies and weddings. It is customary to wear a tuxedo only after 6 p.m.
Black tie etiquette
The tuxedo consists of a number of fixed components, and a few rules come with them. For example, you do not wear a wristwatch, because it gives the impression that you are checking the time. Belts and neckties are not seen at such an evening either; instead you wear braces and matching cufflinks. Around your waist you choose one finish: a cummerbund or a waistcoat, never both.
