Why does white lose its brightness?
-
Sweat and body oils
When these soak into the fabric, they cause yellow stains. -
Detergent residue
When a detergent doesn't dissolve properly, it can soak into the fabric and cause stains. -
Deodorant
Deodorants containing alcohol or aluminium salts are responsible for many an armpit discolouration. So use an antiperspirant deo. -
Wrong temperature
Washing too hot damages the fibres and can discolour the fabric. For most white cotton garments, a wash at 40 °C is sufficient. -
Bleach
A powerful weapon against stains, but excessive use weakens the fabric.
Prevention is better than cure
Now that you know this, you'll of course do everything you can to keep your wardrobe as white as possible! Yet this is easier said than done, because accidents happen in a split second. Try the following tips before you put on your white T-shirt or shirt:
-
Sort your laundry
Always wash white clothing with white clothing! Also try to separate dirtier items from cleaner ones. -
Choose the right detergent
There are detergents specially developed for white clothing. It's not wise to choose detergents with colour enhancers. -
Wash as soon as possible
So don't let your sweaty undershirt marinate on your chair for a week first; put it in the laundry basket as soon as possible. -
Hang your white laundry outside
After washing, hang your white clothing in direct sunlight. The UV rays not only help to make your clothing whiter, but it's also more environmentally friendly than a tumble dryer.
