5 Tips for Storing Your Summer Clothes Properly

Summer holidays have flown by again this year. Packed with plenty of anecdotes, we return to family, friends and colleagues. Still, once you’re back there’s one job not everyone looks forward to: unpacking and storing your summer outfits. Depending on your storage space, there are different ways to keep this process as organised as possible. Here are a few tips so you can pull your holiday wardrobe out of the closet fresh again next year:

1. Everything was handled perfectly

An open door, but certainly no less important. It will surprise you how much loose change, pens and bits of paper we forget in our pockets. So empty them first, so the fabric can't discolour or get damaged. Also check the instructions on the care label before you start; that way the quality is preserved. Let them dry out well too, to prevent mustiness and mould.

2. Check whether your summer outfits still fit you

This is an ideal moment to declutter. Doesn't something fit anymore or do you no longer wear it? Donate it to a charity shop or sell it online yourself. Garments that are damaged or worn out are best recycled. See if there's a collection point near you where you can hand it in.

3. Choose the right storage space

To prevent discolouration, it's advisable to store clothing in a dark space. It's wise to opt for a space with a stable temperature and low humidity. This could be a closed cupboard that you don't open often, but also the attic/loft. It's wise to store your clothing in crates or cardboard boxes so it can keep breathing. If you have little suitable space, vacuum-sealing your clothing in special storage bags is a good option.

4. Fold and hang your summer clothes neatly

Bear in mind that your clothing disappears into a cupboard or box for months. Nothing is more annoying than having to iron or dry-clean deep creases and marks out of the fabric. So you save time by paying extra attention to folding carefully:

  • For shirts and polos, it's wise to button them up. Fold them in equal widths. This makes the final stack stable. In addition, you save space by stacking the collars alternately, just like they do in the store.
  • For men's trousers, too, it's wise to button and zip them up completely. Make sure the legs are folded straight on top of each other. This makes the fabric crease less.
  • Do you have clothing that needs to be hung up, such as the wedding outfit from your summer wedding? Then use special covers combined with cedar wood hangers. The cedar wood spreads a scent that keeps moths away.

5. Protect your clothing

Because no one feels like checking summer clothing weekly, there are a few precautions you can take. For example, a moisture absorber removes humidity and unpleasant smells from the air. Cedar wood blocks or balls keep moths away. A sachet of lavender, rosemary or clove spreads a pleasant scent and keeps insects at bay. Do you suffer from mice or rats? Then plastic bins with lids are the most suitable.
