A turtleneck is a rolled-over collar that sits closely around the neck. A turtleneck is often confused with a roll-neck. However, it sits a lot lower than a roll-neck jumper. A turtleneck is slightly less warm, but a bit more subtle!
When is it called a turtleneck?
In principle, you can call all shirts with a high collar a turtleneck. Such as sweatshirts and jumpers or T-shirts with a higher neck. Yet there really is a difference. History of the turtleneck
The turtleneck is a variant of the roll-neck jumper. The roll-neck dates from the 15th century and was worn only by labourers and sailors. In the 19th century this changed, and from the 20th, intellectuals and artists started wearing the roll-neck. In the years that followed, another variant of the roll-neck was devised, and thus the turtleneck came about. A great item for someone who doesn't feel comfortable with a high roll-neck. The name 'turtleneck' is inspired by the turtle poking its head out of its shell. The neck of a turtleneck is shorter, which places extra emphasis on the face and neck. Just as it is with a turtle, really.
